What is balance?

The sun is shining and yet there is a long, long laundry list of tasks to accomplish.  Trying to find time to spend in relationship.  Still be available for work.  Ok, so what is balance?  Is it returning to center in the midst of all that bustling energy?  Is the bustling energy balance disguised?  Because not being engaged in the world feels like a retreat…which helps bring about a centering, but then its back into life again.

Reiki has always served as an anchoring, an ability to return to perspective…maybe thats the key to balance.  Maybe the scales need to tip more….musings this morning as I ‘tackle’ the list ahead.  Maybe I need to just ride along on the list like a surfer rides the waves…what do you think?

Thanks for sharing Eileen. The issue of balance is one that I’ve been contemplating a lot lately as well, although in all honesty I have been spending too much time in retreat and contemplation, with the awareness that things will hopefully ramp up very quickly in the near future. I look at someone like you, who does so much, and wonder if I’ll ever have the constitution to be so busy. I appreciate your perspective about gaining balance through awareness amidst the multitude of, often conflicting, desires and responsibilities. I think that is essential in helping one to not only remain centered, but also retain a perspective that will best evaluate where more or less time may need to be focused.

In the end, I think it is about keeping tabs on where one’s energy level is at, for if everything we are doing comes from a place of love and genuine motivation and drive, I believe we find that we have much more energy than we ever thought possible. However, if we find that we are constantly involved in obligatory tasks or feeling trapped by the drudgery of a job that really does not reflect our own values, we lose our energy reserves very quickly. Perhaps it is idealistic to believe that we could all be following our heart in our professional and personal lives, but I for one am working to make that the case every day. The best thing we can do is to make sure that we are finding the rest and nurturing we need to compensate for those times when we feel overwhelmed, while constantly maintaining the vigilance of remaining aware of own energy level, how stress is affecting our bodies, and where we can find the time to rest as needed. Not an easy task, to be sure, but I suppose it’s either that or go live in a monastery somewhere!
